Earthquake and wind are two different natural disasters, which would impact the stability of the structure and cause damage to the structure. The effective seismic and wind-resistant design to the structure is essential that it can avoid the destruction of the structure and mitigate its losses, especially for large-scale structure. The most important task of seismic and wind-resistant design is to define the earthquake and wind loads. The methods to determine the earthquake and wind loads both have the similarities and differences, which is caused by the similarities and differences of their characteristics. The main research work covers the following aspects:This paper described seismic and wind from the formation, distribution, intensity measurement, prediction, etc. it compared the characteristics of the earthquake and wind in detail. The formation of the earthquake from the ground, mainly due to the formation of the earth's tectonic movement. Wind is the flow of the atmosphere, mainly due to the difference of atmospheric intensity of pressure. Earthquakes and wind are subject to the laws of statistics in space and time, and they can be predicted by historical data.It illustrated the similarities and differences between earthquake and wind by introduced and compared the input parameters of ground motion and wind characteristics. The characteristic parameters of ground motion mainly are effected by the seismic source, route of transmission, site conditions, etc. The wind characteristics mainly is effected by climate, surface type, etc. The ground motion and wind pressure input to the structure are determined by a variety of factors, such as the characteristics of the earthquake and wind, the structural properties, and so on.Through introduced and compared the static load calculation method, response spectrum method, power spectrum method, time-history method and other methods,it further clarified the difference and contacts of the input of the seismic and wind loads. The similarities and differences between the characteristics of earthquake and wind is the decision of the similarities and differences between the use of calculation methods.
