Landslide is one kind of nature hazards , which threaten our life and lead to death and economical loss and casualty. It happens in our country and many other places of the world. The upper region of the Yellow River in the loess area of west China, the geographical hazards especially loess landslides shows the tendency of growing. As a result, the research of landslide in this region is attracted more attention. The traditional research on geologic hazard always took a long time, and eventually couldn't get a good outcome. GIS as a computer technology combine with geology, take the spatial analysis and spatial data management advantages of it can solve this bottle-neck easily. This paper take the advantages of GIS, built the landslide database and had the landslide assessment with the method of spatial analysis of the upper region of Yellow River. This paper also used the ArcGIS Engine and the C# programming language to do the second development, built the information management system of the research region. At last, use the 3D GIS modeling the research region. The paper researched mainly in the following aspects:(1) Selected the assessment factor such as physiognomy, terrain, geological structure, rainfall and earthquake intensity, combined with the distribution of the landslide in the upper region of Yellow River built the geology hazards database.(2) Define the weight coefficient of assessment factors using the AHP and Delphi method. Divide the region of landslide into three parts:high risk, moderate risk and low risk regions. This can provide great job with the correlation departments to launch the work of hazard resistant.(3) Do some preliminary research on the secondary development, a landslide assessment information system based on ArcGIS was established. Not only did the system realize the basic data manipulation which include data loading , data editing and map browsing, but also realized the enquiring, searching and buffer analysis.(4) Construct the 3D model based on the terrain and remote sensing data. Do some research on 3D real terrain, contour and intervisibility analysis.
