With the logging techniques for solving complex formation and sophisticated explanation required by the petroleum exploration, the research on logging response under the conditions of complex formation, such as thin beds and sloping beds, becomes increasingly the focus of researches. By the finite element numerical method, this paper systematically studies the history and the characteristics of the array lateral logging response. We expect that the array lateral logging can be better applied in evaluation of reservoirs of complex formations, such as thin beds, sloping beds, and so on.According to the principle of the array lateral logging, a forward response mathematical model of the array lateral logging was build up, and derive 3D variation principle of finite element. Study on automatic generation and boundary treatment methods of grids with finite element methods. On the basis of the conditions of actual formation, use non-uniform non-equidistant mesh plotting technology to improve computational efficiency. Then the frontier solution is used to solve the equations and compute the array lateral logging response, which is very efficient when a optimal assembling rule is adopted to diminish the back substitution number. According to the working principle of electrodes of the array lateral logging, compute the potential of complex electrodes of the array lateral logging by imposing different constraints for different logging models, and finally realize the forward calculation of the array lateral logging response.The forward of array lateral logging is used to study the responses of formation in vertical well under different conditions like formation thickness, multi-layer, interbedding, and mud invasion, etc. The simulation results of forward calculation of the array lateral logging response coincide well with the literature abroad. This verify the reliability of the algorithm. Compare the characteristics of the array lateral logging response with that under the same condition. By combining the mud dynamic invasion simulation with the calculation of the array lateral logging response, achieve the dynamic simulation of the array lateral logging response during the process of mud invasion.Achieve the forward calculation of the array lateral logging response under the condition of 3D inclined well. Study the affection, witch is the factors, such as the thickness of bed, mud invasion, alternate layers, and so on, to the characteristics of the array lateral logging response under the condition of different angle of inclination. Under the condition of inclined wells, study the array lateral logging response characteristics during dynamic intrusion process of different mud salinity, and the results better coincide with the condition of actual formation. This is more favourable for improving the accuracy of numerical simulation.Under some conditions, build the apparent resistivity correction chart of the array lateral logging with 3D finite element numerical method. We can achieve the quick correction for the apparent resistivity of the array lateral logging.
