Coal-bed methane refers to the self-born and self-storage natural gas that stored in the coal seam. Coal-bed methane as a new clean energy, has been successfully explored and utilivsed in many countries and regions in the world,. The use of coal-bed methane has important meaning in alleviating demand of energy, protecting living environment of human, solving the safty problems of coal production. Coal-bed methane industry in China started very late, emphasis on the development and utilization of coal-bed methane is within the most recent decade or two. Coal resources and coal-bed methane reserves are abundant in China, especially coal-bed methane in Carboniferous - Permian coal, which has great potential and very good prospects for market developmen.The study area belongs toWubu region, is an important coal-producing area of Carboniferous - Permian coal seam in northern part of Shaanxi Province. Geological conditions in this area is simple, with the characteristics of non-magmatic activity, weak tectonic activity, with thick coal seams (the accumulated effective thickness of coal seam more than 14 meters on average), moderate burial depth (average burial depth of top surface of the coal seam more than 700 meters), and steady coal seam, which are all the favorable factors of coal-bed methane generation and storage. in his article, based on the study of the causes of coal generation theory, coal-bed methane generation theory, coal-bed methane storage theory, combined with the actual geological conditions of coal seam in study area, we made potential evaluatation of the coal-bed methane. This article holds that the coal-bed methane resources are mainly controlled by the following factors: the effective thickness of coal seams, metamorphic extent of coal rocks, coal macerals, coal bed porosity, sealing property of coal bed rock, structural conditions. According to the evaluation of coalbed methane resources in the study area, we think that the factors described above are conducive to the generation and storage of coal-bed methane and that the potential of coal-bed methane in study area is great. And recommendation is that greater extent of research should be put into in that study area, including devoting more financial and technical strength, increasing the size of drilling, particularly on the basis of the drilling trial production in key target to acquire geological information of coal-bed and coal-bed methane system. Based on these, can we accurately evaluate the main target region of coal-bed methane resource and parpare for the large-scale development and utilization.
