Goaf is an important natural disaster in coal-filed, it is a threat coming from the coalfield mining and threating follow-up coalfield mining and the geology safety of coalfield. Transient electromagnetic is a time-domain detection method which is built on the basis of the principle of electromagnetic induction. It detects the underground geological body by analyzing, extracting and studying inspired geological information in response to artificial electromagnetic source. Application of transient electromagnetic in surveying the goaf of coalfield has decades of history. With the updating of the transient electromagnetic apparatus, it is necessary for us to discuss feasibility of transient electromagnetic in surveying the goaf of coalfield. In this article, basing on the principle of 2.5-D transient electromagnetic forward, first of all, the writer achieves 2.5-D finite element forward by FORTRAN programming. Secondly, through the calculation of one-dimensional model which has analytical solution, the correctness of 2.5-D finite element numerical simulation algorithms is proved. After that, the writer gives goaf abstract models in different waterring situation and calculates their transient electromagnetic response using 2.5-D finite element numerical simulation algorithms and converts them into the actual measured parameterΔV, then discusses whether the goaf's electromagnetic response of different watering situation can be distinguished in the condition of the accuracy of the existing equipment and geological noise. At the same time, the discussion of feasibility of transient electromagnetic surveying coalfield goaf is realized. The innovation of this article is changing the feasibility analysis mode of transient electromagnetic from magnetic moment to the practical parameters and improving the discussion of goaf from one-dimensional to two-dimensional.
