Rail container service is a modern mode of transportation. Nowadays, as the development of a variety of transportation modes, to use different transport modes, to organize rationally and effectively the cargo transportation, is the fundamental premise to achieve efficient transportation and the profit maximization. Currently, although container service has made great progress, there are still many shortcomings in the area of multimodal transport of the containers. So it is necessary to explore and study the method of optimization of multimodal transport of the containers. The optimization of the railway container multimodal transport is a far-reaching significance for container transport in China.This paper analyzes the system of the multimodal transport of the containers, particularly, the current development situation, advantages and disadvantages of the railway container transport at home and abroad. On this basis, this paper did some research. The differences to the previous studies, from a new perspective, as the purpose of realizing the profit maximization of the multimodal transport operators, to use the optimization theory, to depend on the different circumstances, has constructed of two optimization model about the railway multimodal cargo containers transport, that is single-destination model and multi-destination model. Because of the multi-period and multi-modal freight scheduling problem is a kind of integer programming model, and is a multi-dimensional knapsack problem, and difficult to give an exact solution, so for each model, we designed their own greedy heuristic algorithms, and made the design of algorithms use into instances. The outcome of the instances said, the constructed models played a role in optimizing in the complex process of shipping schedule problem, achieved the desired effect. The research of the paper has provided some theoretical support for the optimization of the railway container transport organization.
