The soil in sliding zone is an essential part of landslides, and closely related to the evolutionary development and landslide stability evaluation. Based on some experimental results, the paper elementarily discussed the composition characteristics and its genetic significance of sliding zone soil. The characteristics of material compositions were analyzed which is based on the results of XRD and XRF. It was found samples of the main slip zone have more clay minerals than other samples of non-primary slip zone soil. Almost all of the sliding zone soils of Xieliupo landslide contain gypsum. The emergence of gypsum indicated that the environment is strong oxidizing environment in this slip zone. Also, it was revealed that the Al2O3 and SiO2 of main slip zone samples are conspicuous high, but CaO content is low. While the rule of chemical elements of non-primary slip zone samples was opposite. The experimental dates of iron speciation of slip zone of Xieliupo landslide show that the slip zone is oxidizing environment.Structural characteristics and physico-mechanical properties were discussed according to the research results which have been published. (1) Generally speaking, the slip zone has more fine particles and clay mineral composition with suffering from more sliding. (2) The microstructure of sliding zone soil which was formed during the landside mass stable stages shows disordered structure. However, the microstructural characteristic of sliding zone soil is in alignment during the landslide mass slipping, and clay particles even had been elongated. At last, the formation of sliding zone soil was discussed according to the composition characteristics, which contain mineral composition, chemical composition, structural characteristics and physico-mechanical properties of sliding zone soil. The results of this study showed that the formation of sliding zone soil included three aspects:stratum lithology which is a main material basis of the formation of sliding zone soil, shearing effect on rock and soil caused by the dynamic conditions, and groundwater action.
