Earthquake, a kind of unpredictable natural disaster, is one of the greatest disaster which causing casualties. China has suffered the damage from the violent and frequent earthquake disaster. Protection against and mitigation of earthquake disasters now is a strong method which can reduce the loss of earthquake. Emergency rescue is a very complicated process. Carrying out emergency rescue rapidly and efficiently is the goal that rescue crews should pursue and is also the main direction of the study of protection against and mitigation of earthquake disasters.Recent years, with the development of science technology, GIS technology has been widely and increasingly applied in earthquake precautions field. It has been proved by scientific practice of both overseas and at home that the application of GIS technology has gained certain achievement in various aspects such as earthquake prediction, earthquake simulation,.catastrophe evaluation, emergency rescue conduct, policy assistance etc. However, the application of GIS technology in these aspects need further improvemes because it has been applied in earthquake precautions field not long ago.The thematic information of the quake emergency rescue is important for the commanders of the rescuers, for it can provide the clues for them to implement their prompt command. For a long time, the study which focus on it is extremely inadequate.And a general survey of the study at abroad and home reveal that seldom papers and related achievements have been issud. However,the classification of it is crucial for the storage and search of the thematic information, and sharing of the system. The thesis, on the basis of the repeatedly investigation, classify the thematic information of the quake emergency rescue and present a set of coding system.Rapid cartography system of earthquake emergency rescue map is a system with the aim of providing promtly the thematic map showing the situation of the quake-striken area for the commanders of relief workers. As to such a mapping system, a symbol system with good performance is crucial in drawing the map rapidly and accurately; in addition, only to symbolize the thematic information of the quake emergency rescue on the map can the commanders understand and use it. The symbol system studid in this thesis is just designed and developed by the above two reqirements. The system, as a subsystem of Rapid cartography system of earthquake emergency rescue map,providing the basic symbol system and symbol editing environment for the whole Rapid cartography system of earthquake emergency rescue map, solves the problems which the existing quake themantic symbols have.
