With the development and popularization of computer technology, the way of management in various fields becomes automatic or semi-automatic, instead of manual way. This thesis researches on the ways to analyze digital terrain in geo-information system, so as to improve the working efficiency and decrease the mistakes due to human factors.On the basis of generalizing the current achievements on digital terrain analysis application, the paper mainly discusses some key technologies, such as selecting available region, positioning the mountaintop and recognizing the type of mountaintop.From the features of digital elevation model, we select the available region by using the slope factor and mathematical morphology. The results of experimentation show that it is a fairly feasible way to acquire available region, which can select demanded regions in a variety of shapes and remove the useless region.Considering the particularity of mountaintop, and refering to the concept of contour line in cartography, the paper proposes a way to position the mountaintop based on image processing. According to changing trends of the position and slope of mountaintop, this paper designs a way to recognise the type of mountaintop by exclusive methods. It has been proved to be effective by distinguishing cuspidal mountaintop from round or flat one.
