Synthetic ammonia wastewater is one of high ammonia-containing industry wastewaters which are difficult to treat by biologic processes. The wastewater has been mostly treated by traditional biological processes, and the treatment cost is very high. SHARON-ANAMMOX process is a novel process which has been developed in recent years.Compared with traditional biological processes,it does not require organic electron donor, needs less energy supply for aeration, consumes less neutralized chemicals. The feasibility and operating performance to treat synthetic ammonia wastewater by SHARON-ANAMMOX process are studied in this essay. It took 140 days to start up the SHARON process with aerobic activated slugde in SBR bioreactor. The nitrgeon removal load in the SHARON reactor was about 311.6mg/(L·d) and the nitrite accumulate rate reached 98% when increasing influent ammonia concentration came to 400mg/L. when DO was measured at 1.0-1.5mg/L,pH was adjusted to 7.5-8.5,temperature was maintained at 30±1℃,the good efficiency and stable performance of short nitrification in reactor can be achieved. After mixing effluent of SHARON reactor with initial wastewater NH4+-N/NO2--N in mixtrue was 1.0-1.5, meetting the demand of ANAMMOX reactor influent. It has been proved that SHARON process was suit for treating high ammonia-containing industry wastewater such as synthetic ammonia water.Nitrgeon loss by denitrification was found to be one of important factors leading to nitrgeon loss.It took 100 days to start up the ANAMMOX process with anaerobic granular biomass as inoculun in SBR bioreactor. The ratio of NH4+-N removal, NO2--N removal and NO3--N production was 1:1.3:0.26 and the performance of ANAMMOX process was stable. But when the influent NO2--N concentration stepwise increased to 250mg/L, the removal rate was reduced to 31.2%.The reason is that the ANAMMOX reaction was inhibited by hign NO2--N concentration in the ANAMMOX reactor. The performance of SHARON-ANAMMOX process was studied with synthetic ammonia wastewater. The average removal rate of COD and NH4+-N were 44.63%, 54.54%, respectively, when the composition of synthetic ammonia wastewater was in mg/L:COD:300~500mg/L;NH4+-N:200~400 mg/L.The removal of the effect is low. It indicated that SHARON-ANAMMOX process was still confined to dealing with simulated wastewater.
