The purpose of this thesis is degradation of water-insoluble gaseous benzene by electrochemical oxidation in aqueous environment. In this research, high concentration water-insoluble gaseous styrene and toluene were successfully removed. In order to provide the optimal results for industrial application, the favorable parameters were discussed. The electrochemical reactor consists of 5 pairs of stacked mesh electrodes. Each pair of mesh electrodes consists of a Ti/RuO2 anode and a Ti/RuO2 cathode. The distance between two neighboring electrodes is 50 mm. Experimental results showed that both styrene and toluene in the air stream were effectively removed by the electrochemical reactor. The removal of both styrene and toluene increased with the increase of current density to the reactor and with acidic solutions as absorbent. The removal efficiency of styrene and toluene were 88.1%, 78.81% respectively with an operation condition of current density 0.08A/cm2, pH 7, 10g/L NaCl. Absorption solution was another important factor on the removal of styrene and toluene, and effect of absorbent NaCl on removal was much better than of absorbent Na2SO4. The removal of both styrene and toluene in sodium hypochlorite solution was higher than that in hydrogen peroxide water solution indicated that the oxidative capacity of ClO? was stronger than that of H2O2. Both of major productions of styrene and toluene degraded were confirmed to be benzoic acid. Finally, pilot test on removal of styrene and toluene was performed, the removal efficiency of styrene and toluene were 83% , 81% respectively with an operation condition of absorbent NaCl , pH 7, current 40A, indicating that electrochemistry process had a good effect on the treatment of VOCs.
