Synthesis Of Crystal Violet Lactone

Leuco crystal violet lactone(LCVL) was prepared by the reaction of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde with N,N-dimethylaniline and m-dimethylamino-benzoic acid or by the reaction of Michler抯 alcohol,obtained by the reduction of Michler抯 ketone,with mdimethylaminobenzoic acid.The oxidation of LCVL by air or other oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide affords crystal violet lactone(CVL).The effects of the reaction time ,the temperature ,the reactant ratio,and the catalyst used on the reaction were discussed.
