Modern analytical technology including thin layer chromatography (TLC) , high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC), gas chromatography (GC) and high performance capillary electrophoresis(HPCE) had play a more and more important role in the analysis of natural medicines. These analytical methods were applied to the analysis of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).High performance capillary electrophoresis was developed in the early 1980s, and has been successfully used in a wide range of application areas. The analysis of Chinese traditional medicines, natural medicines, herbs, etc., is an area where CE methods match, because these are quite complex mixtures of various compounds. Several features of CE such as high resolution, speed of method development, robustness, simplicity, low cost, ect., enable the successful separation of these complex samples. This paper included two parts:(1)A capillary electrophoresis method was developed for the separation and determination of tropane alkaloids in Flos Daturae plants. The developed method was applied for the analysis of herb samples.(2)Methods utilizing various chiral selectors such as CD and its derivatives, bovine serum albumin (BSA), human serum albumin (HSA) and /-leucine has been developed for chiral separation by means of capillary electroph- oresis (CE). The developed methods can be applied for the analysis of ephedra plant extracts that contains the four test drugs.
