The acrylates emulsion pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) plays an important role in Chinese PSA industry. The n-butyl acrylate is one of important chemical materials. Manufacture of PSA with advantages of energy-saving and environmental protection is one of research hotspots. This thesis aims at the studies on the synthesis of n-butyl acrylate by esterification and the preparation of acrylates emulsion PSA. The n-butyl acrylate was synthesized by esterification with strong acidic cation exchange resins that have good activity and selectivity as catalyst. The n-butyl acrylate after simple physical process can be acted as monomer directly to synthesize acrylates emulsion PSA.Synthesis of n-butyl acrylate catalyzed by heterpoly acid, cation exchange resins and dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid as catalyst was studied and the optimum reaction conditions were gotten. The optimum reaction conditions catalyzed by cation exchange resins as follows: the ratio of n-butyl alcohol to acrylic acid was 1.2:1, catalyst was 27.8g resins/100g acrylic acid, azeotropic solvent was 72g/100g acrylic acid, reaction time was 3h, the final conversion was more than 97%.The rate equation that can well fit the experimental data under the reaction condition has also beenpresented as followed: in which k = 9.33 105exp(-60030)the Activation Energy is 60.03kJ/mol, the pre exponents is 9.33 105 kgrnin-1mol-1.The n-butyl acrylate after simple physical process can be acted as monomer directly to synthesize n-butyl acrylate emulsion PSA. The properties of pressure-sensitive tape were good as the standard of using. The present technology of monomer synthesis and polymerization has the advantages of energy-saving and environmental protection because some processes are unused. Stability of emulsion and effects of synthesis process of n-butyl acrylate on its emulsion polymerization kinetics were studied. It shows that the amount of acrylic acid will affect the polymerization rate and stability.
