This essay described the FEM simulation of plastic pipe extrusion: the factors of melt line formation and heat transfer of cooling processing were mainly discussed. Because of the variety and complexity of plastic materials, HDPE was selected as the material of pipe, since the polyethylene pipe has glorious market future. The FEM simulation software ANSYS was used in this simulation, which was widely used in different areas.The FEM simulation of velocity distribution, viscosity distribution and pressure distribution of basket die flow channel was presented. Through the analysis of basket die flow channel, an optimal design was put forward. During this process the velocity field, the viscosity field, and pressure fields' concerned values variation are also displayed. Using the theory of compensation effect between compress ratio and the length of straight section, the pressure of flow channel were mainly study according its influence on melt line. It was discovered that different geometry of flow channel and different processing parameter have apparently affect on pressure distribution and pressure losing. Therefore, the relationship of melt line and pressure was mainly emphasized in this part. Through analysis of the pipe cooling process, the distributions of temperature, temperature gradient and heat flow rate were displayed; a prediction of minim cooling length was also made. The literatures of concerned plastic melting cooling processing have never been reported according to author's knowledge.Through the simulation, not only the variable of extrude processing can be seen vividly, but more important the design of die and accessory equipment can be optimized, and theoretical references can also be provided for extrude processing. Apparently, these points can not easily be obtained from other methods. In brief, the computer simulation has its unique and absolute advantages in plastic pipe extrusion process.
