The present water environment and its research evolvement both at home and abroad are analyzed. For the sake of the complex spatial characteristics of water environment information, one way using GIS technology to deal with it is introduced. As the keystones of this paper, the integration of the one-dimensional and two-dimensional stable water quality model with GIS, the dynamic water environment capacity calculation and the water environment quality evaluation are discussed in detail.Aiming at realizing the dispersion, numeric calculation of water quality model and the visualization of modeling result, it is necessary to do some generation on the selected river. The one-dimensional river is sectioned, while the river of wide channel is divided into grids. The way adopted to plot grids is two-dimensional river regime fitted orthogonal grid for river channels, and the generated grid can approach not only river tendency but also the boundary line of river using improved one.By the use of the programming language Visual Basic and the GIS develop component MapObject, the following projects are developed: the Water Environment Capacity Research of Jiangsu Province, the Water Resource Preservation and Management of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the Water Resource Management of Liuzhou. On one hand, the GIS mentioned above is user interface friendly and fully functional, on the other, it visualizes the output result of the water quality model, which definitely improves the efficiency of water environment information processing and management. The level of handling and management of water environment information will be raised greatly.
