3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride(CHPTMAC) is widely used as a quaternary ammonium cationic etherifying agent. The quantity only used to prepare cationic starch is very large. There are different processes to prepare CHPTMAC. Currently, the active component content of the domestic products is about 50%. Sometimes the appearance color is yellow. While the product whose active content is 69% has already been produced by Dow chemical Corp. And its appearance is colorless. In order to ensure their cationic starch's quality, most domestic modified starch manufactures buy the abroad CHPTMAC.In this thesis, CHPTMAC was prepared by one step method and purified by extraction and steam stripping etc. Main influence factors such as pH, reaction temperature and feed ratio are studied. And also purification condition is studied. On the basis of those, a preferable synthesis process is brought up and a better product is produced.The products' qualitative analysis is carried out using LC-MS and GC-MS. An associative analysis method for the product is founded. If there is not the standard sample, the quantitative analysis can be carried out using depositing analysis, gas chromatography and HPLC. It also can be used to determine the mass correction factor. In addition, the products' qualative was checked up by HPLC and the etherifying experiments.
