There are mainly two parts in this paper. The effect of wheel parameters and grinding parameters on surface roughness is analyzed by orthogonal test when reactive sintering Si3N4 ceramic is ground. Through the experiment data and metallograph comparison of the Si3N4 ground under different conditions, some laws about the effect of different parameters such as grain size, wheel speed, grinding depth and feed rate on the surface roughness are found and the optimizing parameters combination to improve the surface roughness is obtained. Few relative research reports about this field can be got, the research results of this paper perfect the laws of single factor analysis and have guiding significance in the productive practice. The most important conclusion includes: 1) wheel parameters and grinding parameters cannot be considered individually in grinding the engineering ceramic by diamond wheel because there exist the different laws when single parameter and interactive parameters are chosen. 2) the best matches of the grain size and the wheel speed are low-low, middle-middle, high-high. In a word, higher wheel speed should be selected when wheel with thin-size grains is used in order to improve surface roughness. 3) in certain range, large grinding depth is helpful for improving the surface roughness when ceramic is ground by the wheel with middle-size or thin-size grains. 4) single parameter or interactive parameters have different effect on the surface roughness parameters such as Ra and Sk .In the second part, with the help of MATLAB software, a software program used to show the relationship between wheel parameters and grinding parameters is completed and the grinding parameters are optimized based on the relationship. The key parameters representing the diamond grinding wheel's properties definitely are combined and the relationship between different parameters is found. The visualization research on wheel characters and grinding parameters gives us visual basis to select the parameters. Especially, when a grinding parameter is chosen, how to choose other parameters according to the relationship of them. These research results can not only be applied to the productive practice, but also can be popularized in the market.
