Copper is widely used in many nationaleconomic fields because of its excellent anticorrosive ability. An important limitation for copper is that it readily change the color of the surface due to its oxidation and corrodes in various aggressive environments. Corrosion inhibitor such as benzotriazole was offen used to prevent copper to corrode in various corrosive medias in the past years. Recently, it was found that alkanethiols can adsorb onto the copper surface through strong chemical interactions and provide excellent protection on copper. More attention has been paid to the structure of this kind of monolayers in recent years. However, Their ability to protect copper from corrosion has been scarcely studied. The application of 1-dodecanethiol to protect copper against corrosion in industry has not been reported yet.At this background, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, polarization curves techniques and the weigh-loss measurements were used to investigate the anticorrosive ability of the self-assembled monolayers of 1-dodecanethiol and benzotriazole on copper. XPS and SEM techniques were used to investigate the constitution and topography of the copper surface under different condition.Following results were obtained:(1) The self-assembled monolayers of 1-dodecanethiol and benzotriazole both can provide anticorrosion on copper. The self-assembled monolayers of 1-dodecanethiol are more effective than benzotriazole under the same codition.(2) The self-assembled monolayers of 1-dodecanethiol and benzotriazole have no synergistic effect. The anticorrosive ability of the self-assembled monolayers of 1-dodecanethiol became weaker with the addition of benzotriazole.Abstract(3) The anticorrosive ability of the self-assembled monolayers of 1-dodecanethiol became stronger with the addition of adsorption time. Good anticorrosive ability can be achieved in fifteen minutes.(4) The anticorrosive ability of benzotriazole is more easily to be effected by the changing pH.The results of this paper provided good reference to the application of 1-dodecanethiol to protect copper against corrosion in industry.
