Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) technology has been used widely in production, aerospace, aircraft, medical and virtually all areas of conductive material machining. It is such an important operation that, in some manufacturing areas, WEDM is the only choice in the right time and at a justified cost. And the increased use of WEDM in manufacturing will continue to grow at an accelerated rate.This paper presents the configurations and mechanisms of HS-WEDM Based on vast related literatures and experience, introduces the recent overseas' advancement of LS-WEDM, review the research state at home and abroad, introduce the developing tendency of WEDM so as to provide a reference to the domestic research.The influence of various factors to machining precision and stability is analyzed, especially the wire tension varying and the vibration in cutting progress of high wire traveling speeding is researched. It is pointed out that the wire's position is the significant factor affecting the machining performance. As higher and higher level of dimensional accuracy and surface quality are demanded, conventional HS-WEDM will continue to reach their limitations. It is impossible to obtain a precise work piece with good surface quality on HS-WEDM, this is because it is hard to keep the stability of the wire's position when the wire is traveling in a high speed and circularly. Though many measures are taken to this problem, but it can't be solved. There have been many researches on HS-WEDM in the past and at present, all of them focused on how to improve machining performance. But the key problem is ignored, that is the wire's position. The solving direction has been proposed that LS-WEDM should be developed. And the methods and strategy about how to develop LS-WEDM are studied.
