Free radical polymerization plays an important role in modern polymerization reaction engineering, and in all kinds of free radical polymerization, binary copolymerization is particularly important. However, there are some defect and argument in all existing free radical copolymerization theories. Based on the analysis of predecessor's work and the pretreatment of the experimental data published in the literature, the Pseudo-Kinetic Rate Constant Method was chosen as the chain propagation model and the Diffusion Control Model was selected as the chain termination model. Based on the theory of Three-Stage Polymerization Model(TSPM), a successful model in describing free radical homopolymerization, a new and simple free radical copolymerization model was proposed. In addition, the new model covers the whole range from low conversion upto high conversion. Then, by using a large number of experimental data of binary copolymerization from the literature, the proposed model is critically tested. The results show that it is widely applicable in different kinds of binary copolymerization. Besides, the new model is simple and easy to use practically.Furthermore, it is attempted to study the application of the model in ternary copolymerization. For lack of literature data in this area, the copolymerization system of acrylic acid-sodium acrylate, which is a kind ofSuperabsorbent Polymer(SAP) with high economic value, was chosen as the sample to be investigated. In this paper, DSC is used to measure the kinetic data of this system under different temperature and initiator concentration et al. On the base of the treatment with these data, it is found that the new model is also valid for the ternary copolymerization.
