The principles of the electrostatic desalting and dehydration for crude oil, the structure of the desalter, the technology and the control method of the process were studied systematically. The present status and the development trend of the techniques of electrostatic desalting and the dehydration for crude oil at home and abroad were discussed as well. Based on the summerization of previous work on the development of demulsifier, a high efficient demulsifier for the western Kuwait crude oil was prepared, and its HLB (Hydrophile and Lipophile Balance) value and synthesis ratio were determined. The effects of the desalting temperature, washing water ratio, electric volt, demulsifier concentration and the mixing strength on the efficiency of desalting and dehydration were investigated deeply. By application of the orthogonal design method, the optimum conditions of the electric desalting plant for the crude oil concerned were obtained. A test with these conditions was carried out and it was proved that the operation of the plant was stable.
