It is the pipeline constructor's hope to succeed in the downstream Yangtze River crossing. In 1976, LuHu oil pipeline crossing failed at the north bank of Yangtze River for the difficulty in executing the plan. At the first phase of the feasibility study for the West-East Gas Pipeline Engineering project, the same problem was met again. Under such circumstances, the pipeline design unit assumed the responsibility to research on this crossing subject. Combining the characteristics of the large-scale pipeline, the group made great efforts comparing, studying and then demonstrating different crossing points as well as crossing alternatives. Finally it is recommended to adopt the tunnel shield crossing method for Yangtze River crossing at SanJiangKou, east of Nanjing. This paper covers the research report on the crossing subject and now acts as the directory document for Yangtze River crossing. As the principal of the research group, the author also takes the charge of the design and review work for this project. The author's rich on-site experience helped him solve many technical problems during construction. This paper is based on the new report improved according to the actual construction condition.
