Biofilm reactors are biochemical reaction systems developed from the self-cleansing mechanisms by the soil. Biofilm reactor is a highly effective and compact technology of wastewater treatment. Biofilm reactor has the advantage of traditional actived sludge process, and its process characteristic which differs from traditional actived sludge is that the biomass is attached to fillers which is fixed up along with the water in the reactor. In contrast to traditional wastewater processing, biofilm reactors have high processing efficiency, high impact resistance, and the capability of maintaining a stable internal ecosystem without secondary pollution. Therefore, they usually require smaller area, simpler management, and lower cost for operation. Recently, biofilm reactors have been more and more used in wastewater processing. In our study, a new type filling material developed by NET Inc, Japan was used as the carrier for the biofilm, and a series of simulation experiments was explored for processing of household wastewater. The capability for removing carbon and nitric pollutants, and the maximum load for the filling material were tested by processing the household wastewater at various HRTs.Good processing capabilities of the biofilm system have been demonstrated during the intermittent operation of 285 days. The average removing percentage for the COD in the original wastewater is over 90%,with significant effects for TN. The SS in processed water is controlled within 100 mg/L. Secondary deposition pool is not needed, which reduces the cost. Moreover, the biofilm reactor system has low requirement to the equipment, where the cost is reduced further by using only one pump for the wastewater inlet stream. It was found that the maximum COD load for the studied filling material is up to 5000 mg/L, which demonstrated the capability of high resistance for the COD loading.
