After the view of " the fabric hand feeling is able to be measured" was put forward by Perice in the 30's of 20 century, the research on the fabric is in the ascendant. Particularly with the development of computer technology and the application of computer graphics, the simulation of fabric deformation is in imposing array. The classical method to measure fabric drape( the light electricity projection) in two dimensions is already hard to satisfy people's demand, and the three dimensional drape of fabric must be studied. There are three models in fabric transform study, geometry model, physics model and geometry-physics model, and each has its own strong point. To distinguish the differences of different fabrics in drape characteristics is the most important in the research of fabric drape, therefore, a geometry model isn't feasible. The physics model can be used in the fabric drape, but the model is complex with large calculation quantities. The geometry-physics model can be used for the fabric drape research and easily carried out. We set up a geometry-physics model to simulate the fabric drape, and following contents were investigated.(1) The research methods and theories on the fabric drape were systematically discussed and analyzed.(2) It was put forward that the macroscopic curves contained fabric mechanical properties in the drape research. Firstly the mechanical properties of a fabric were measured, then, the drape characteristics were simulated by geometrical calculations.(3) The fabric drape curves in two dimensions can be fitted to the 3-4 times polynomial curves. A series of mechanical properties of some fabric samples were used to calculated their 2-4 times polynomial simulation curves, and these polynomial curves were compared with the actual drape curves of theses samples. The errors between the polynomial curve and samples order were analyzed.(4) On the basis of the macroscopic characteristics of the fabric drape curves in two dimensions, we indicated that the drape curves could be approached with 3-4 arcs and straight lines. The assumption conditions of breaking points among segments were given, and with the change of assumption conditions, the drape curves can be more accurately simulated by using more arcs. We used 3-4 arcs and the straight line to approach the drape curve.(5) A simple calculation method was used in the simulation of drape curves, in whichthe drape curve was cut in the equal amount of arcs. The combination o f arcs and straight lines was used to approach the drape curve of a fabric. Compared with the normal coordinates calculation way, our method was easy and fast.(6) According to the above methods, programs were carried out to simulate. It was supposed that an ideal fabric had the same space between yarns in warp and filling wise. The drape shape of an ideal fabric was simulated by use of the equal amount of arcs. These results can be further used in the estimation and evaluation of the static and dynamic drapes.
