The nodular cast iron is a structural material which is used very comprehensive in production and scientific research, it is used to make various parts which stressing complicate and heavy load, being required better wear resistance. The innovation of nodular cast iron is one of the greatest achievements in material science and technology in the 20th century. Many studies have shown that the whole degree of round and distribution of the graphite in matrix have remarkable influence on the mechanics performance of the nodular cast iron. However, in the past, identifying the grade of graphite sphere by manual observation through metallographic microscope was not only lower in efficient but also poor in repeatability. In addition, the measuring result with manual observation method will vary as individual operator. The purpose of this subject is trying to establish an automatic evaluating system of graphite sphere grade of nodular cast iron based on computer technology and relevant image processing method. An automatic evaluating system of graphite sphere grade of nodular cast iron has been established. The hardware of the system consists of microscope, CCD, imaging acquisition card and personal computer and digital images of metallographic structure of the samples can be collected satisfactorily. Distribution and shape characteristics of graphite sphere are the decisive factors to properties of nodular cast iron. And branch geometry is one of the most effective methods to study and analyze irregular structures. So describing the extent of graphite sphere outline undulation with fractal dimension of fractal geometry will be a good selection. It was proved by experiments that the bigger fractal dimension is, the bigger the outline undulation of graphite sphere and the lower the degree of the graphite sphere roundness. The evaluating model has been created based on fuzzy mathematics and nodularity rate, roundness and decentralization were composed. In this case, the grade of graphite sphere can be reported in 6 degrees. Although the images of metallographic structure can be displayed and processed automatically and also the grade of graphite sphere can be evaluated by the system, much work for improvement still exists.
