Hollow fiber membrane modules are widely used in membrane separation process of mass transfer. And the shell-side mass transfer is focused on due to the complicated conditions and various affecting factors. In this paper, mass transfer performances and enhancement on the shell-side were broadly investigated based on the deoxygenation experiment. The shell-side mass transfer performances of the straight hollow fiber membrane modules were studied both experimentally and theoretically. The effects of the different packing fractions on the mass transfer coefficients were compared under the same flow condition by measuring the shell-side hydrodynamic and mass transfer performances of hollow fiber membrane modules with the different packing fractions. And then the correlation with the packing fractions involved was obtained. Moreover, the effects of the non-uniform distribution of fibers and the polydispersity of fiber outer diameters on the mass transfer performances of hollow fiber membrane modules were calculated theoretically with Voronoi tessellation based on the normal distribution function. It is found that the two factors have great influence on the flow distribution and therefore the shell-side mass transfer performances of the hollow fiber membrane modules. Better agreement was reached comparing the mass transfer coefficients obtained through theoretical calculation and experimental study, which indicates that the calculation method can be used to predict the shell-side mass transfer...
