Abundant opal mine was discovered recently in Xinjiang Beitun. It was worthy to develop applications of opal, especially in fields of filled plastics. In our research, application of opal filler in HDPE was studied for the first time. The composition and properties of the filler were analyzed, It was studied that opal with different particle size was filled in HDPE at different percent, and the effect of the surface treatment to opal was discussed by analyzing mechanics properties of HDPE filled with opal. The experiment results show that, After opal was treated with stearic acid, Impact strength of HDPE sample, filled with opal at scale of higher mu, was improved observably with the tensile strength decrease little. When we filled.HDPE with opal at scale of 3000 mu by 30 Phr, its Impact strength was increased almost 100%, and it could be 160% higher by treated with titanate coupling agent. When opal was filled to HDPE sample as a new type of filler, transformation of brittleness- toughness happened in the condition that opalparticle was small enough and put to be enough percent. Stearic acid play a good role to treated the opal filer to improve HDPE sample's strength, especially at the increase of toughness. The results of treatment of titanate coupling agent were better than Stearic acid's. Compared with HDPE sample filled with CaO3 in the same process, HDPE sample filled opal were increased highly at impact strength at the same time it's still be better than HDPE filled with CaO3 at tensile strength. In addition, we test rheology performance of HDPE/opal filled system, which indicated that HDPE filled with opal filler treated by stearic acid still have good process performance. However, opal filler could be processed really simple with a low price, which help this new type of filler have a broadly application in polymer filled system. The filled system treated by stearic acid at large ratio is endowed with good impact intensities, which makes opal as promising filler.
