Magnesium alloys have the advantages of light-weight, high strength/weight ratio high stiffness/weight ratio, high damping property and electromagnetism shielding, so it will act an important role in automobile and electric industry as a weight reducing material. Heat-resistant magnesium alloy is needed strongly in some industries. But the interrelated study is on the initial stage. In this paper, GW83 alloy has been fabricated with micro-alloying element rare earth. The mechanical properties at room temperature and HV hardness of the alloy were studied by using modern analysis and test facilities such as optical microscopy, X-ray analysis(EDAX) and inductively coupled plasma(lcp), etc, effects and heat treatment on the microstructures and mechanical properties has been investigated. The results show that the microstructure has lower quantity of second-phase and the grain didn't grow up under 450 0. The mechanical properties of GW83 alloy was increased by T4( 4500 × 6h). In GW83 alloy, β -precipitates precipitated in the grain and grain boundaries with two mechanisms of continuous and discontinuous precipitation. The β -precipitates precipitated with discontinuous precipitation mecha-nism grew lamellar from grain boundaries to the inner of grains, which decreased the mechanical property of the GW83 alloy. But the β -precipitates precipitated with continuous precipitation mechanism precipitated inside grains, which enhanced the mechanical properties of the GW83 alloy.
