A novel series of biodegradable polyester were synthesized via esterification ofsebacic acid, glycol and glycerol. Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), X-rayphotoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-raydiffraction analysis (XRD) and mechanical tests were performed to examine theproperties of polyester. Results showed that the products exhibited typical highelasticity and showed good hydrophilicity (contact angle 55-65°). As the ratio ofsebacic acid and glycol in raw material increased, the modulus of the products alsoincreased and the microstructure changed from partly order to disorder.Degradation tests showed that the products had good biodegradability, and theweight losses were between 6.1-14.4% after degradation in the phosphate buffersolution with porcine pancreas lipase at 37oC for 72h. As the ratio of sebacic acid andglycol in raw material increased, the products had better biodegradability.Using agar overlay test and MTT assay, the biocompatibility of products wasevaluated. Results showed that all tested products were proved to have goodbiocompatibility in vitro. Gelatin was used to modify the products' surface. Water contact angle measurementshowed that hydrophilicity of products was improved.
