Poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone), a novel high performance polymer with remarkable thermal resistance and solubility developed by Dalian University of Technol ogy, has a strong competitive capability in international markets. In order to broaden its applications, the work aims to decrease melting viscosity of PPESK by blending the thermotropic liquid crystal polymer (TLCP) and reinforce its mechanical properties by filling the short glass fiber and carbon fiber.Melting blends of poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) /poly ether sulfone (PES) /TLCP were prepared by two screw extruder. The melting viscosity of blends decreases with the addition of TLCP. Miscibility of blends was investigated via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that PPESK/PES/TLCP blc mis are immiscible in all compositions. The 5% loss temperature of blends reduced th rough thermo-gravimetric analysis(TGA), which illuminated thermal stability of blends decrease lightly with increasing of TLCP content. At the same time SEM showed the TLCP dispersed phase in corresponding samples had its morphology from spherical, th rough ellipsoidal and elongated, to fibrilar. In despite of fibrillation of TLCP in resin melts with 20% content, for interface strength between TLCP and resin was small, Me chanical properties of blends had not got improved. The Glass powder filled PPESK composites were by a high-speed powder mixer. The mechanical properties of composites were investigated. The results showed that fle xural properties of the composites increase, and the tensile and impact strength decrea se while increasing the content of glass powder. Glass powder treated by coupling age nt has a good interaction with matrix, which was important to advance mechanical pr operties.Short glass fiber and carbon fiber reinforced PPESK composites were produced by a twin screw extruder, respectively. Their mechanical and tribological properties were tested on a mechanical machine and MM-200 testing machine and wearing mechanism was analyzed by SEM. The flexural strength of glass fiber and carbon fiber reinforced PPESK composites enhance, but impact strength of all composites decrease. The Wear rate and friction coefficient decrease with the increasing of CF.Short glass fiber or carbon fiber reinforced PPESK composites containing different content of TLCP were produced by a twin screw extruder, respectively. The viscosity of PPESK/PES/GF composites decrease apparently, reducing the breaking of glass fiber and carbon fiber, heightening tropism of GF/CF in the flowing direction. The results indicated that the flexural strength of PPESK/PES/GF/TLCP composites and PPESK/PE S/CF/TLCP composites increased, but the impact strength of the two reinforced composites decreased. The friction coefficient of the PPESK/PES/CF/TLCP composites decrease, and the wear rate become larger compared to PPESK/PES/CF composites.
