With the development of industry and transportation, the pollution of the environment becomes more and more severe, environmental problem has become a principal concern throughout the world, as a result, it has become a challenging issue. So we are confronted with an urgent solution to the environmental pollution, and many research institutions in some countries have been developing high sensitive detecting methods for environmental pollutant. Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is developed quickly and widely in many fields because of its low detection limits, simple instrumentation, small volume, light weight, low power, high sensitivity, short analyzing time and the fact that it can be operated at atmospheric pressure. It is just the real-time monitoring, sensitivity, selectivity, and response speed that makes this technique preferable to other monitoring methods. So researchers continued to gather fundamental data about this technique and the potential applications. The primary works are summarized as follows:In the first section we provide a brief background on the present condition of environmental pollutant, and advances in environmental monitoring are reviewed. The advances of IMS technology and the applications of IMS in environmental monitoring are described in detail. After a statement of the basic problem, in section 2 various situations involving possibility knowledge are investigated: Firstly, an entirely possibility model of ion mobility spectrometer made in our laboratory is proposed. Secondly, the basic structure of IMS, especially the core component—drift tube is discussed. Thirdly, ionization processes in IMS, namely the basic principle is introduced briefly. Lastly, the theory of ion mobility and resolution are considered. This gives much valuable information to the later researchers. After the testing of the setup, the IMS experimental setup and methods usedin our experiment are determined in later section. Benzene and Formaldehyde are detected using this setup. We also investigate the mobility spectra of single analyte at various concentrations, different temperature, drift voltage and drift length. Then we discuss the detection results, and the conclusions are drawn. The result of experiment and theoretical analysis indicated that laser-based IMS is very suitable to environmental monitoring. Conclusions and future work are summarized: The application of IMS to environmental studies has been recognized, and we get the conclusion that IMS is an effective method for environmental monitoring, and that IMS technology has great practical value.
