The technologies of coated tools not only can improve operating life and machining efficiency, but also can obtain enormous economic effects. The multicomponent CrAlTiN coating was deposited by close field unbalance magnetron sputtering ion plate technique. The cutting performances of coated PCB micro-drill and coating characteristics were studied. The results showed that multiple metal film and a high hardness transitive layer can raise greatly the wear reistance and hardness of micro-drill,which can benefit the life of multiple metal coated micro-drill 3 times higher than that of original micro-drill. After it drills 7500 hits, the main invalidation is wear in outer corner regions and tool flank. But the head of uncoating micro-drill appears to breakdown easily. In addition, wear and tipping lead to its failure when it drills 2000 hits. The best compatible coating thickness of micro-drill is 2μm.During determination of the coatings characteristics, the coating surface and across-sections were observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results show that the multicomponent CrAlTiN coating substrate is much more ideal and the coating microstructure is even and compact, by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis,it contains CrN and Ti2N mostly. In a word, the multicomponent CrAlTiN coating satisfies the performances of high abradability, high toughness and high heat conductivity on the PCB micro-drill. So it can be widely used in manufacturing.
