The main purpose of this paper was to separate the individual hydrocarbons in gasoline, by chromatography and based on it to calculate the composition of gasoline as well as the octane number, etc. The individual hydrocarbons in gasoline was determined by the capillary gas chromatography, and the separation condition was optimized and the standard database of individual hydrocarbons was developed. The individual hydrocarbons were qualitatively determined by the retention method, and quantitatively determined by calibrated peak-area normalization method. The individual hydrocarbons in gasoline were divided into 37 groups, each as a variable, and the regression model correlating actual research octane numbers and 37 variables were developed by partial least square method to calculate the octane number of gasoline. The programmes (used in the qualitative and quantitative determination of individual hydrocarbons, PONA composition and the calculation of octane number) were developed by POWERBUILDER. The maximum deviation between the octane number calculated and measured was 0.3 units, and some important information such as carbon number distribution and composition, could be obtained. The method was easy to operate, needed lower sample and was of high accuracy. it could be used in the calculation of aromatic latent content of raw oil of reforming unit and the monitoring of the octane number of FCC gasoline and final gasoline .
