Mixing is a central feature of many processes in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food industries, etc. Process Engineers,especially at middle or small scale companies, are often faced with the problems of mixing equipment selection,design,scale-up and optimisation.The research in this area has a history of over half centry and many empirical correlations have been obtained for desicrbing mixing processes. However, knowledges on this field are still much limited and more attentions need to be paid. Since mixing process becomes more and more complicated, it's very difficult to carry out design duties without any sofeware tool, especially, for non-experienced engineers. Mixer1.0 which is a software that could simulate the whole mixing process with user-friendly GUI,high reliability, integrated database, visual designing process, high calculating accuracy, convenient updateing and network function has been developed independently. The software is to enable engineers to select and design agitators for a number of mixing duties such as blending of miscible liquids,solid-liquid mixing,gas-liquid mixing and heat transfer. The paper also describes the model and developing steps of Mixer1.0, the models used in this work represent the most advanced outcomes in this area. An Expert System in Mixer1.0 is also developed for the selection of impellers to enable non-experienced engineers to do it easily, and the models and developing process of this Expert System is another subject of this paper. The Expert System actually is a kind of computer program based on knowledge base to solve prolems, in short it's an intelleligent system based on knowledge. Jbuilder9.0 enterprise edition is employed for the development of Mixer1.0, which is one of the ripe Integrated Development Environment in Java and the most popular programming tool at the current state. Validations of Mixer1.0 have been done with some practical mixing process data and results show great satisfactions.
