With the increasing global competition and the rapidly developing information technologies, modern companies have to face the difficult problem to promptly meet the market requirements with lower cost and higher qualities. The trends of globalization of the product design and manufacture, working with the Internet and Virtual Reality technology are the key features of modern Manufacture Industry. They are also the most important ways to enhance the companies' competitive power.Virtual Product Design Technology (VPD) is based on the computer simulation and the model of product life circle. It includes Computer Graphics, Artificial Intelligence, Concurrent Engineering, network technologies, multimedia technologies and Virtual Reality (VR). The paper discusses the application in the Garment Industry and studies VPD in the garment field from the real design requirements of virtual design. As a result, it puts forward a Garment Virtual Product Design System (GVPDS) based on VR.The research is conducted, first of all, to set up as objective the appropriate data structures and algorithms modeling 3D body-forms. We make use of Java 3D API to create directly realistic graphical environment. In the project a female body-form is chosen for modeling. While minimizing the post-processing cost, both surface data sampling on the body-form and cubic polynomial interpolations are utilized to build and refine the geometric modeling data for the original 3D body-form. The underlying mathematical model of the 3D body-form isfunctionally parameterized upon 7 input controls including: neck circumference, across shoulder, chest circumference, waist circumference and hip circumference to characterize the circumference sizes of the body-form;the back length and hip length to characterize its height factors. Different categories of body-form models are accurately built based on data transformations by applying adjustment functions with provided parameters to the well-defined standard model respectively.Secondly, based on the parameterized modeling of body-form, we have implemented a set of algorithms to support 3D garment modeling and design procedure. Considering both static and dynamic variations of different parameters of any human body, appropriate data representations describing the details about the fitness of the garment to the body need to be analyzed, so that the best correlations between the surface of the body-form and that of the garment can be determined precisely. Using this optimized modeling along with given parameters characterizing the body sizes and the styles of garment, the system takes into account the functions related to the relax amount of pattern pieces in conjunction to the expected fitness of the garment to the body as well as the garment properties of its inner space in contact with the body, to predict the derivations between the human body and the garment, and finally obtain all the control points of the resulting design model. Such information is then going through synthesis process to create the desired garment surfaces, which can be visualized and reviewed under ideal conditions.Virtual manufacturing system (VMS) is a mapping of a reality manufacturing system under a virtual reality environment. Virtual manufacturing technology is based on the VR technology and simulation technology. It includes designing, machining, assembling,modifying, a virtual environment formed through modeling constantly, the virtual process and the virtual product. The paper is focused on the device model preparation module of the VMS. After the research of structure characteristics and running method of the automatic pocket sewing machine, the paper presents a 3D graphics simulation modeling mechanism which is oriented to this machine and gives the method of implementation, which is based on Object-Oriented technology and Virtual Simulation technology.GVPDS and Virtual Simulation System is a new way to apply the VR to the Garment Industry. If further study is made, this system will be a good platform for garment design and manufacturing in the garment companies.
