The dispersion polymerizations of styrene were studied with [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride (DMC) as polymeric stabilizer, methanol and methanol/water as media, and the cationic microspheres of polystyrene were prepared. The morphology of microspheres was observed by SEM, and the cationic groups of quaternary ammonium distributed on the surface of microspheres were characterized by XPS and electricity titration. The behaviors of dispersion polymerization of styrene in methanol and methanol/water media were investigated. The influences of reaction parameters on polymerization and morphology of microspheres, including particle size and its distribution, were examined.Using methanol as media, the obtained results show that the cationic microspheres of polystyrene are almost monodispersed, with average particle size ranging from 0.46 to 2.78μm. Monomer conversion increases gradually with reaction time, showing a mild behavior of dispersion...
