Ultra-fine ground calcium carbonate is an inorganic powder, which is inexpensive, easily obtained and widely used. Since its particle size is very fine, and its big specific surface area and high surface energy, the powder is very easy to reunite. This seriously affects its original superior property and its application. So improving the dispersion of the powder is a key of its technology. This paper mainly studies the effect of dispersants on the dispersion of ultra-fine ground calcium carbonate in water.Based on colloidal dispersion stabilization theory, by means of sedimentation volume, viscosity measurement etc., the mechanism of stabilization of ultra-fine ground calcium carbonate aqueous dispersions are investigated under nine different dispersants. The studies show that (NaPO3)6, SDBS, PVP, PEG are effective dispersants for ultra-fine ground calcium carbonate aqueous dispersions. The studies also show that the stabilities of suspensions are intensely influenced by the contents of dispersants and pH value in suspensions. The higher contents of the dispersant do not the better dispersion effects, the contents of the dispersant have optimum contents.
