In the 21st century, green manufacturing will be one of the important features and basic production patterns of manufacturing industry, and it has extensive connotations. In the metal cutting field, there are several kinds of greening cutting methods. The most important way is elimimating cutting coolants with cold gas, to reduce environmental pollution, to improve machining quality, and to reduce production cost. How to supply the cooling gas with steady and adjustable temperature and pressure to the cutting zone is key technology of the green cutting method. In the paper, the main work is to design and manufacture a new type cooling air generator and to carry out some cold gas cutting experiments on several kinds of difficult-to-machine materials. The main work in the paper has been summarized as follows:1. Based on reviewing the present research status of the cooling gas generator and refrigeration methods, a combined refrigeration method was presented to develop a new type cooling gas generator.2. The working principle of a new type cooling air generator was put forward. Based on it the new type cooling air generator was designed and manufactured.3. The refrigeration performances of the newtype cooling gas generator were tested and analyzed, and the testing results showed that the device satisfies the designing requirements. The equipment can supply cooling air with the lowest temperature of -30℃, highest pressure of 0.6MPa and largerst mass flow rate of 10g/s, and has many advantages such as quick refrigeration, good adjustable and responsible performance. Owing to these outstanding virtues, the deivce is suitable for application and popularization.4. Under different cooling and lubrication conditions, contrastive cutting experiments on three kinds of difficult-to-machine materials were carried out, by using the cooling air generator.
