On the effect of international cigarettes taste being changed, the consumer's taste is turned gradually into high flavor, low tar and less harmful cigarettes. However, with an effort to reduce tar and decrease harm to consumer's health in making tobacco products, a lot of smoke flavor may be lost. It is therefore highly desirable to compensate for these losses by developing tobacco flavor additives, thus the development and improvement have been impulsed by the studies of tobacco flavor and techniques of tobacco flavor blending .In tobacco industry, flavor compouds are known to make an important cntribution to overal flavor character of tobacco. The investigation of tobacco flavorts is an important field in tobacco chemistry studies. Megastigatrienones are degradation products of carotenoids, and they as a class of natural fragrant tobacco components are described in tobacco. Megastigatrienones are oil liquid, possess tobacco fragrance. They can distinctly enhance tobacco fragrance, modify the taste, harmonize smoke, reduce irritation. They are also the essential parts of flavors that used for blending tobacco products. Nowadays, they have been used broadly in perfume, cosmetic, beverage and aromatizing foods. Megastigatrienones can be obtained from natural products, but there are only a few of megastigatrienones existing in natural products. Thus, only depending on extracting from natural products to get megastigatrienones can not meet with the market requirement. Therefor, we investigated the synthesis methods, after comparing each advantages and disadvantages, we designed and optimized a novel synthesis route for megastigatrienones in this paper. We also processed the target compound' synthesis studies, at last we succeed to design a new synthetic method for megastigatrienones . Megastigatrienones have been achieved by using a-ionone as initial material through allylic oxidation, selective reduction and dehydration in sequence. The yield is 62% in the new method.
