The blank is one of the key in sheet metal forming, and the figure and determination is the difficult to the optimum blank. Reasonable design of the blank will make it flowing streamlined of the material, decrease the possibility of wrinkle and fracture, and improve the quality and accuracy of product. So it can combine the economical and formability. With the development of computer technology and FEM theory, FEM have been popularly used in the analysis of sheet metal forming. The method can be used accurately simulate the sheet metal flanging which has the non-linear geometry, the non-linear material and the non-linear boundary. This paper is about the problems come from R&D and production field, using the FEM soft-wares– DYNAFORM based on the digest absorb a great deal of overseas and domestic literature information. The analysis is to the blank in flanging based the FEM theory.Firstly, the theory and actuality is studied about the sheet metal forming which is focused on the flanging in this paper. Then the FEM technology is introduced in detail to the sheet metal forming. Secondly, it is researched including the forming limited, thickness after forming and distribution of stress and strain to the different figure blank. Thirdly, the lubricating condition to the blank has effected on the stress. Then, different materials are compared including the energy and distribution of stress, some rules and conclusions are obtained. Optimum blank is obtained by FEM, so the difference is small between the effect of simulation and design product. Lastly, the conclusions are tested by experiment and used in manufacture, and the last results are satisfied. The results about blank that come from FEM can guide the production of flanging and other similar forming and play an important role in interrelated studying.
