The research status for microwave sintering of ceramics, the synthesis process, the mechanism, the development of microwave sintering system, the equipment in the past few decades have been reviewed. The research and development on Sialon ceramics, the structure, performances and preparation process has also been discussed. In present study, research focus on the preparation ofβ′-Sialon ceramics from powders of aluminium, silicon and alumina using microwave (MW, 2.45GHZ). The processing parameters, such as the ratio of the starting materials, the atmosphere, synthesis temperature, flowing gas, soaking time and the seed ofβ′-Sialon grain, and the properties of the sinteredβ′-Sialon ceramics have been studied. Results show that when the specimen sintered at 1500℃and soaking for 90 min, the properties of sintered sialon (z=3) are best for which density is near to 3.050g/cm3 and bending strength at room temperature is 150MPa.And it is also indicated that the microwave sintering is superior to the conventional method in lower temperature sintering and shorter soaking time, which will be beneficial for industry to save energy and cost.
