With increasing concern and establishment of more strict laws on environmental protection, it is advantageous to manufacture environment-friendly coatings such as water-borne alkyd coatings as well as water-borne alkyd resin. In this paper, the synthesis of maleopimaric acid anhydride (MPA) and the preparation of water-borne alkyd resin as well as water-borne primer have been investigated. In addition to procedure for the preparation of MPA, water-borne alkyd resin and water-borne primer, the factors influencing the properties of resin are also studied. The results can be summarized as follows:1. The Synthesis of MPAResin acid can be separated from rosin with cyclohexylamine, and then undertakes Diels-Alder reaction with maleic anhydride in the presence of para-toluene sulfonic acid using acetic acid as solvent. When the amount of catalyst para-toluene sulfonic acid was 10mol% on anhydride, and the apparent molar ratio of rosin to maleic acid anhydride was 1.9:1, the yield of synthesized MPA can be as high as 70.3% if the reaction was carried out at 180°C for 4h.2. The Preparation of Basic Water-borne Alkyd Resin, Maleic Rosin Modified Water-borne Alkyd Resin and MPA Modified Water-borne Alkyd ResinThe fatty acid method, which combines both solvent method and melt method, was employed to prepare water-borne alkyd resin.
