Adding additives into oil to reduce friction and wear and to mend the wear surface has been widely applied in all kinds of lubrication for quite a long time. In the past few years, the emergence of nano-materials has provided a new choice for the development of lubricant additive. Nano-particles have small dimension effect, quanta dimension effect, surface effect and macroscopical quanta tunnel effect, so they manifest a series of specific physical and chemical characters. At the same time, through the research of tribological property many scholars found that the tribological properties have been enhanced obviously after the nano-particles add into oil. As for the mechanism of anti-wear and friction reduction, the following explanation has been predicted by most of professionals that the nano-particles act as "the third body" between the two friction surface, and some ever proposed that the nano-particles were rolling like a ball in the grinding area, and changes gliding rub to rolling rub, which leads to the reduction of friction. But now with the research's embedding, more and more people believe that nano-particles deposit on the friction surface and compensate the loss of mass, the so-called mending effect. However, systematic work for investigating the mechanism of the mending effect of nano-particles has rarely performed.The tribological characteristics of nanometer particles and its friction reduction and anti-wear mechanism have been studied in this paper. With the reference of many relevant materials, Tribological performances of the nano- Cu, Al, Al2O3 particles as additive in lubricating oil were studied by friction and wear tester as well. After observing and analyzing wear surfaces by SEM, STM and EDS, the friction reduction and anti-wear mechanism was put forward that nano-particles become the film that shear easily in the interface to protect the wear surface, and metal nano-particles partially melted when it contacted with friction surface and then adhered to each other to mend the friction surface, and nano- Al2O3 change gliding rub to rolling rub for carrying the load as ball bearing...
