Increasing competition for better product functionality, quality, features, customization, environmental friendliness, lower cost and shorter delivery time presents unprecedented challenges in product development and optimizing product entire life cycle for product manufacturing enterprises. Based on the research of the spray-painting machine function and configuration, this paper introduces Adaptable Design (AD) into development of spray-painting machine structure. Following the discussing on general methods and principles of adaptable design, relevant developments are performed for the pipe spray-painting machine and the box-like spray-painting machine, including module division, platform construction, module model design, product structure stress evaluation and mechtronical bus interface design. With the technology studying on CAD representation of bus interface, a computer aided design software system for spray-painting machine is developed. The main contexts are as following:Chapter 1: Summarizes the present research state of adaptable design and relevant technology, and presents the project presentation, studying contents and significance.Chapter 2: Studies the adaptable design principles and methodology on base of product platform and mechtronical bus for spray-painting machine. At first, adaptable design concept and adaptable product configuration principles are proposed systematically. And then, aiming at pipe spray-painting machine and box-like spray-painting machine respectively, function analysis and functional structure modelling are constituted.Chapter 3: Studies the product platform establishment and serialization design of spray-painting machine. As for the pipe spray-painting machine, mechanical model analysis and serialization design principle of the climbing platform are discussed, on the base of which pipe spray-painting machine model design is performed and product functional adaptation and design adaptation are achieved. As for the box-like spray-painting, module model design and product serialization design is done, and structure stress FEA analysis and optimization based on CAD/CAE are illustrated.
