For 21th century of environmental protection, a reduction of the sulfur content in diesel has become an urgent task. Because the traditional HDS techniques need high investment for the equipments and operation cost, it is difficult to satisfy with production of clean diesel with the ultra low sulfur and to face increasingly serious technical and economic problems. At present, many states have been studying the new desulfurization technology for diesel. The study is focused on oxidation desulfurization. However, the wide use of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant for oxidation desulfurization is expensive and unbearable.for small refinering works.In this paper, a novel deep oxidation desulfurization was studied. Potassium permanganate was combined with hydrochloric acid for a new KMnO4/HCl system of oxidation desulfurization. Under room temperature and pressure, light simulation oil, FCC diesel and hydrogenation diesel were tested, respectively. After extraction of oxided diesel, sufur content in FCC diesel and hydrogenation diesel was decreased below 10μg/g, which meets the international standards for clean diesel. NMP, furfural and DMF's selectivities are good for extraction as they can effectively separate oxidated sulfone from diesel. The technology is a promising for an industrial application. It not only overcomes the shortcomings of H2O2 oxidative method, but also economically is superior to HDS on economy.Based on the preliminary study of oxidative desulfurization for diesel, the laboratory operation and analysis methods were established. The optimal conditions including catalyst, extraction and operating effects were determined. The kinetics of oxidation was probed to provide a theoretical foundation for KMnO4 oxidative desulfurization.
