City is the center of the human's politics, economy, society and culture, and also is the human's habitat. The human's prosperity and advancement is promoted by the city's development. However, the negative effect of the city's customary development mode begins to reveal with accelerated urbanization and population swells. From the last century, people began to think the mode of the future city, and that eco-city is perfect development mode brings into common gradually.As a the megapolis and also a historic and cultural city, the Shanghai's orientation is a modern international city and be a international center of economy, finance, trade and shipment. From the 1990's, Shanghai began to discuss eco-city. However, with the deeply understanding of eco-city and sufficient recognization of itself trait, Shanghai eco-city establishment should be advanced gradually. In the first stage, Shanghai establishes an ecotype city inlO to 20 years. As a part of carrying out the ecotype city building, the research of the index assessment system should be the first step.Synthesizing the concept and definition of the ecotypic city with the most advanced Chinese and foreign theories and methods in the field of systems models for the assessment of ecological cities, five principles for index assessment system is advanced, that is science integrality, conciseness, arrangement, development and maneuverability. This paper establishes a three-dimensional systems model, which being structure, function and coordination. Once the standard rates and the relative importance of all basic indexes are established, it is possible to assess any aspect of the city under examination. It is possible to obtain the overall efficiency rate of the urban composite ecological system by submitting the different levels of indexes of the index system to a series of comprehensive calculations. Thus, it is possible to assess the state of ecological development of the city under examination, and in the furtherstep, to offer some guidance and advice for the city's future ecological development.Having established the systems model, including the index system, this paper proceeds with two case studies demonstrating the systems model's application to authentic research questions. The first example is a comparative study of the cities Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Hangzhou in terms of their ecological development. It becomes apparent that score of ecological development in Shanghai is similar with Guangzhou and Beijing, while Hangzhou is lower than other three cities. Further analysis reveals that Shanghai takes a leading position among the four cities in the function and coordination, but betraying substantial weakness in the structure. The second example of the systems model's application to authentic research cases analyses Shanghai's ecological development during recent years, employing for the study data from 2000 to 2005, all data reveals that urban construction developed toward the good direction as a whole.At last, taking Shanghai urban eco-system as study object, analyzing eco-system basic element, this paper finds out existing problem of Shanghai eco-system structure, function and coordination, provides theory gist and developing strategy for Shanghai ecotypic city construction. Through reduce population density of main city zone, develop ecological industrial system, and protect the natural environment, optimize the energy strucrure, promote information capability, thereby further strengthening city risk-prevention capacity, to build a harmonious ecotypic city.
