High Speed Machining (HSM) is an advanced practical manufacturing technology. It is becoming the main stream of machining and has powerful vitality and wide prospects for application. Brief introduction on key techniques, theoretical foundation and development status of high speed machining at home and abroad is given in this paper. This article studies the high speed machining mechanism based on finite elements numerical simulation, by establishing geographic model of the work piece and the tool, transmitting it into DEFORM-3D and processing finite element analysis. Through simulating the processing of machining alloy aluminum using hard metal alloy, this article analyses the relations between the cutting forces and the cutting speed, the temperature of the chips and the cutting speed, and reaches a conclusion.Differing from conventional machining, HSM brings lower cutting forces, smaller machining distortion and higher precision because 95% of the heat producing in machining process is taken off by the chips. Aimed at these characteristics, this article designs the experiments which analyses the reasons through altering the cutting parameters and the machining strategies to solve the roughness of the alloy aluminum and the distortions of the thin-wall work pieces. Finally this article gives the suitable cutting parameters and the optimized technique processes for machining alloy aluminum.
