Magnesium alloys have many advantages with low density, high specific strength, excellent damping and electromagnetic shielding performance. Being regarded as 21st century's green engineering materials, it is promising for magnesium alloys sheet to be widely used in aero and spaceflight, vehicle and 3C products. Magnesium alloy parts manufactured with pressing, stamping, welding processes by sheets have much more advantages such as high efficiency, large scale production and thinner thickness. Therefore magnesium alloy sheets have wide potential application and large requirement.Wrought magnesium alloy sheets produce by traditional ingot casting-hot rolling method have higher price and low yield due to complex producing process and high energy consumption. Strip casting is a promising route to directly produce magnesium alloy sheet by twin roll casting method. In recent years, the research and application of magnesium alloys have been attractive all over the world. The new route has been proposed to produce magnesium alloy sheet with excellent performance by strip casting and downstream rolling technology. In this paper, aimed at a new manufacturing process of wrought magnesium alloy sheet by twin roll casting strip AZ31B, the effect of process parameters in homogenization, rolling process and annealing on microstructure and mechanical properties was studied. The results will provide theoretical foundations and technological basis for manufacturing process of high performance wrought magnesium alloy sheet by twin roll casting strip. The main contents are presented as follows:(1) In order to study the workability of twin roll casting magnesium alloy strip AZ31B, studies on the microstructure and mechanical properties were carried out.(2) The effect of process parameters in homogenizing on microstructure and mechanical properties was studied, and the optimal homogenizing process was ascertained.(3) Experimental study on the downstream rolling process of twin roll casting magnesium alloy sheet was carried out, the effect of process parameters in rolling processing on ductility and properties of AZ31B sheet was clarified.(4) The annealing process of downstream rolling wrought sheet AZ31B was studied. The proper process parameters have been determined for AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet production by strip casting and downstream rolling. It provides theoretical basis for industrial application of magnesium alloy production by strip casting and rolling and will be valuable to promote the commercial progress of magnesium alloy sheet.
