In our country kaolin resources is very abundant, particularly coal-based kaolin which reserves lie front in the world. It has a wide distribution, an excellent characteristic and easy to exploit and develop. Recent years, along with the economy development, the kaolin industry also got a substantial development. In petroleum cracking industry, fluid catalytic cracking of kaolin has become the main body. But the raw material of this type of catalyst is the non-coal-based one which come from Suzhou ground, the abundant coal-based kaolin in west China use less in that realm. To develop the abundant resource, Y zeolite was synthesized through in situ synthesis from coal-based kaolin. The modification of Y zeolite using rare earth and oxalic acid was studied. Then we investigated its capability as the main active phase in FCC catalyst in catalytic cracking and the catalyst was characterized using XRD, BET and mini-reaction methods. The result shows: a kind of Y zeolite with good structure can be synthesized from Inner Mongolia coal-based kaolin, but the condition of synthesis should be controlled strictly. And the crystallization time, oriented substance and amount of the added alkali play an important role in the same time. Great changes in the zeolite were found after the modification using rare earth and oxalic acid: acid-situ increased, stability of water hot strengthen, cracking capability reinforced. Use acid modified kaolin replace the original kaolin as the matrix of FCC catalyst could raise the cracking capability, too.
